Natural gas is a hot talking point in Tanzania. It is hardly now living in Tanzania for months without hearing any single announcement about natural gas. It affects Issues ranging from politics to energy.

As I am speaking with Tanzanians graduates, I often hear the same sadly statement “Where are the jobs in Tanzania oil and natural gas sector” Local entrepreneur too, they don’t aware on where to invest in Tanzania natural gas sector as the oil and gas industry is a complex industry.

All studies show that Tanzanians are optimistic about natural gas to create many jobs. However its seems people are misguided about the industry. Oil and natural gas industry are highly capital intensive industry and, therefore, don’t prefer to have many employees

When we talk about natural gas our mind sunk into how revenue that will be generated from natural gas would be distributed and utilized. However, we don’t think on steps required to be taken for natural gas production begin and time framework for production. Furthermore, Citizens misinterpret between natural gas discovery and commercially proven discovery.

Oil discovery
Although total natural gas finds in Tanzania is recently standing at 55.5 trillion cubic feet but the country has no recent oil discovery. There a lot of misinformation passed around about discovery of oil in the country.

Recent statistics results by U.S energy information administration indicate that Tanzania does not produce crude oil and consume 350,00 barrel  of refined crude oil product a day in 2013. And all were imported. However exploration is ongoing so crude oil discovery might be forthcoming.

After successfully completing pre-university courses Ghati joined with the university of Dar es salaam  and do  Bachelor of science in mineral processing engineering

Desire to pursue career in petroleum industry
While she continued her studies, One among of their teachers taught a module about exploration and drilling of oil and natural gas. From that day on Ghati began fascinating with oil and gas field.
She began to look for all opportunities concerning oil and gas industries, and finally  went to Norway for masters’ degrees in petroleum engineering thanks to Statoil company’s scholarship

To make a long story short, currently she is in one-year industrial practical training enjoying a career in oil and gas industry.

Important Properties of Rocks

Rock Formation Showing Strata For rocks to contain oil and gas they must have two very important properties. The rock must have a place for the oil and gas to be stored. These storage areas are called pores. These pores are not visible to the naked eye and must be viewed using a microscope. The number of pores that a rock contains indicates how much oil or gas can be stored. The more pores the more oil or gas that can be contained in the rock.

Scientists measure the amount of pore space by determining the rock’s porosity. Porosity is expressed as the volume percent of the rock that contains open space and can range from 5 to 30%.

The greater the porosity, the more oil and gas can be stored in the rock. Porosity does not mean that there is oil or gas in the the rocks. In fact the pores could be filled with water.

Not only must the rocks have pores, the pores must be connected so that the oil and gas can move through the rock. Scientists measure the ability of oil and gas to move through rock by determining its  permeablity.

Oil and gas in low permeability rock have difficulty moving out of the rock and into a well. Permeability is measured in thousandths of a darcy or millidarcys. Sandstone and carbonate rocks are generally the most porous and permeable rocks and are therefore where scientists usually find oil and gas.

Even though Tanzania natural gas reserves were discovered in 1974, it was after thirty years later, in 2004, that production commenced.

This reveals a situation in which the government was excited to improve its petroleum resources, but was unable to do so due to a weak bargaining position.

Since 2010 several natural gases have been made, this indicates that Tanzania would be among the largest natural gas exporter for the future. According to an International energy of US, Tanzania has the potential to become a liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporter in the future.
However, the most important things to be done is to control public expectation on this natural gas resources. Studies of all oil and gas economies have shown that citizens expectations on natural gas are unrealistic.

Most Tanzanians especially those who live nearby the natural gas is found expect to become rich and are very optimistic that natural gas industry will create millions of jobs others think revenue generated from natural gas will stay in the hands of corrupt leaders and politicians which all of these is unrealistic

In order to avoid resources curse the country should manage expectation of its citizens. The most effective way to do so is what is called “Information sharing and public disclosure”
