The recent Africa Technology Conference, held from May 27 to 29 at the Hyatt Regency Dar es Salaam, marked a defining moment for Tanzania’s energy sector and its aspirations to become a regional powerhouse.
Under the theme “Navigating the Future: Building Technological Excellence for Sustainable Energy in Africa,” the event convened over 500 industry leaders, experts, and innovators to explore cutting-edge technologies and investment opportunities in Africa’s oil and gas industry, with Tanzania firmly positioned at the center of this transformative dialogue.
A Strategic Vision for Sustainable Energy Development.
In his opening remarks, Eng. Charles Sangweni, Director General of the Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority (PURA), who presented the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Hon. Dr. Doto Biteko, highlighted the critical role of local partnerships in ensuring sustainable and successful investments within Tanzania’s energy sector. This call to action aligns seamlessly with the government’s broader strategy to attract foreign investment while empowering Tanzanian stakeholders to actively participate in the oil and gas value chain.
Unlocking Tanzania’s Upstream Petroleum Potential.
Eng. Modestus Lumato, Director of Economic Analysis and Monitoring at PURA, presented an optimistic outlook on Tanzania’s upstream petroleum sector. He detailed the upcoming Fifth Offshore Licensing Round, which is expected to be auctioned this year.
This round will offer 26 exploration blocks—23 primarily offshore and 3 onshore in Lake Tanganyika. These blocks present lucrative opportunities for exploration and production, attracting global investors eager to tap into Tanzania’s vast hydrocarbon resources.
Additionally, Eng. Lumato highlighted key projects on the horizon, including the Ntorya Gas Field project—operated by the joint venture partners ARA Petroleum Tanzania and Aminex Plc—and the upcoming drilling activities at the Mnazi Bay gas field. These projects underscore Tanzania’s expanding footprint in the regional energy landscape and its commitment to sustainable development.
