Tanzania plans US30mn gas plant investment in Lindi

The Tanzanian minister for energy and minerals, Sospeter Muhongo, has announced that the government will invest at least US$30bn for the construction of a gas processing plant in Lindi region

Speaking at the official launch of the Nanenane exhibitions in Lindi, Muhongo said the government is already embarking on the grand plan and that Lindi residents and Tanzanians in general should expect economic revolution in a few years to come.

“I would like to ensure Lindi residents and Tanzanians in general that our economy is going to grow at a high speed, we are going to invest at least US$30bn in the construction of gas processing plant,” he said.

Muhongo pointed out that for the gas plant, the government will be required to construct about 200 km of gas pipes from the sea to the plant. Given the large scale of the project, the project requires huge amount of investment, high skilled and experienced personnel as well as good supervision and is likely that it will take many years to complete.

According to the minister, upon completion of the project, the government will be able to process gas and thus boost the country’s economy.

The project is expected to increase earnings for the government through consumption of natural gas while at the same time provide opportunities to improve such sectors as health, aviation, sea ports among others.

Muhongo also added that since the discovery of natural gas in Tanzania, the economy has witnessed tremendous growth, with 70 per cent of power generation coming from gas, which is currently serving more than 30 industries in Dar es Salaam.

Tanzania’s Oil and Gas Are Neither A Curse Nor Blessing

I remember  the optimism with Tanzanians  when  the  Italian Oil company  (AGIP) , broke the news on Natural  gas discovery  In the songo songo field In 1974.

Many had strong feeling  the new found resources wealth could transform their lives. And brought hope to a future generation.

It’s  42 years now.  Tanzania’s petroleum resources have become a powerful magnet for foreign investors. And  we hear new gas discoveries  announcement  every now.

The  question  lingered  in mind is how best to  manage such resources.  And  transform temporary  windfall into general  uplifting of the population.

Experience  is the great teacher.

In many African countries, natural resources have fueled violence and war instead of an opportunity for all.

In Nigeria, for example,  Oil has resulted in violence in the  Niger delta. And despite the Oil wealth, Unemployment remains high. And poverty is still widespread .Surprisingly enough, 93 million Nigerians live in the households that  lack access to electricity.

Kampuni ya Statoil Tanzania ina furaha kutangaza majina ya vijana watano waliongia fainali za shindano la biashara la mashujaa wa kesho ambalo lina dhumuni la kuhamasisha ujasiriamali kwa mikoa ya kusini mwa Tanzania yaani Mtwara na Lindi.

Akitoa taarifa hii meneja wa shindano hilo kutoka Statoil, Erick Mchome amewataja washindi hao kuwa ni Razaki Kaondo, Edward Timamu and Sifael Nkiliye (walioshiriki kama timu moja), Saleh Rashid Kisunga, Azizi Doa, na Yunus Mtopa.

Shindano la Mashujaa wa Kesho lilihusisha vijana wenye umri kati ya miaka 18 na 25 kutoka mikoa ya Mtwara na Lindi kuwasilisha mawazo yao ya biashara ambayo baadae yalibadilishwa na kuwekwa kwenye andiko la biashara.

Mwaka huu shindano hili lilivutia vijana zaidi ya 400 ambao waliwasilisha mawazo ya biashara zao zinazolenga sekta mbalimbali za uchumi kama kilimo, ufugaji, mawasiliano, na biashara nyingine ndogondogo. Vijana waliruhusiwa kushiriki mmoja mmoja au hata kuunda vikundi vya watu wawili mpaka watatu.

Mwazo bora yaliyopatikana kati ya 400 yalikuwa 60 na wamiliki wa mawazo hayo ambao ni zaidi ya vijana 80 kutoka Lindi na Mtwara walipewa mafunzo maalum ya kuandaa andiko la biashara ambapo yalishindanishwa tena na kupatikana vijana kumi bora waliopelekwa mbele ya majaji ambao wiki hii walichagua maandiko matano bora kati ya kumi waliyopokea.

“Vijana hawa watano watawasili jijini Dar es Salaam wiki ijayo ili kuja kutetea maandiko yao ya biashara mbele ya jopo la majaji ambao mwisho wake wataamua nani anafaa kuwa mshindi wa shindano letu,” alisema Bwana Mchome.

Mshindi wa shindano hili atatangazwa siku ya Ijumaa tarehe 15 Aprili jijini Dar es Salaam katika hafla maalum iliyoandaliwa na Statoil ili kumpongeza mshindi huyo na wenzake wanne ambao wamefanikiwa kuingia fainali. Mshindi huyo atajinyakulia kitita cha dola za kimarekani 5,000 wakati washindi wanne waliobakia watapata dola 1,500 kila mmoja. Washindi wengine watano waliofanikiwa kuingia kumi bora watapata dola 1,000.

“Statoil inaamini katika kuwawezesha vijana wenye vipaji katika maeneo yote ambayo tunafanya shughuli zetu na kwa kufanya hivi tunachochea maendeleo katika maeneo hayo ambayo nasi ni sehemu yake kwani tunafanya shughuli zetu za uendelezaji wa nishati kama gesi na mafuta.,” amesema Meneja Mkazi wa Statoil Tanzania, Øystein Michelsen.
